JELSA - HVAR
Beneath the tallest peaks of Hvar Island you can find a little town Jelsa. Named after a swamp Fons vocata Ielsa, today its visitors find a magnificient combination of cultural wealth and cherished traditions there.
Jelsa was founded as a port for community of Pitve, and its importance grew over the centuries. During the 19th century it was one of the most significant maritime, shipbuilding and trade centers of the Adriatic, a starting point for sailing vessels carrying best wines of Hvar, olive oil and salted fish.
Jelsa is surrounded by indented shore with many small islands, coves and spots where you can find true pleasure and peace. The scent of lavender welcomes visitors upon arrival to Jelsa.
Good to Know
- The wine industry was nearly destroyed by the grape phylloxera in the second part of the 19th century.
- One of the most beautiful parks of Dalmatia is located in Jelsa – Perivoj, founded in 1870 on a floodplain.
- Jelsa also hosts numerous festivities and manifestations. The most famous are the Fishermen night and Wine festival.
